It would be one thing if the Essence feature were simply added content, but the main feature is shortened to make room for this story. Unfortunately, the backup story continues to be a drag. His panel arrangement is especially interesting in these recent issues, complementing the bold, striking figure work the series is known for. Additionally, Kenneth Rocafort delivers yet another sleek, attractive set of pencils. At this point it's probably too much to hope that Roy will display the same depth as his two partners, but at least he's slowly becoming more likable as the comic relief of the Outlaws. Roy also receives a slightly heavier focus as his narration frames the events of this issue. While Lobdell plays up the comedy with Jason's failed date night, that material is growing a bit old and played out. For once, Jason takes a bit of a backseat in the script. DC Comics announced in June 2011 that Jason would lead a group of antiheroes in the monthly series Red Hood and the Outlaws, which debuted in September 2011.
Not to mention that the new Starfire/Blackfire dynamic is shaping up to be very interesting. Not only does the reader finally understand what makes this new take on Starfire so cold and hostile, but it makes her more sympathetic at the same time.
